Abstract

Cinema serves as both entertainment and a medium for learning, often reflecting societal truths and evolution. However, language barriers can impede understanding, particularly in films from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This study explores the role of syntax in effective communication, especially in translating complex sentences in cinema. Using a comparative translation approach and Newmark's theory, the research examines translations of complex phrases in "Raya and the Last Dragon." The qualitative descriptive method is employed, analyzing translation techniques and complex sentence structures. Findings reveal prevalent use of free translation (30%), followed by literal (23%) and semantic (20%) approaches. Adverbial clauses dominate complex sentences (70%), followed by noun (17%) and adjective clauses (13%). Recommendations include deepening theoretical understanding, exploring diverse translation methods, and utilizing films for linguistic studies. This research enhances comprehension of translation science and syntax's role in effective communication, particularly in cinematic translations.
